Maine Legislature Fails to Implement MaineCare Expansion over Governor's Veto
Maine voted last year to expand MaineCare (Medicaid), however DHHS has failed to make the changes necessary to add anyone to the program. The Governor has declined to take steps to expand the program without the Legislature coming up with a permanent funding stream. This week, the Legislature voted to provide $60 million in funding to add an additional 70,000 Mainers to MaineCare, but the Governor vetoed the bill. The Legislature would have needed a 2/3 majority vote to overcome the veto, but fell short. The next step in the process will probably be played out in the courtroom.
